Campground and Marina Water Quality: Hardness, Filters and RV Plumbing
Water can look clear and still be hard. A few checks at the hookup help you decide what treatment your rig needs and when it needs service.
Start with the source
Campgrounds and marinas may use municipal water or a well. Neither label tells you the hardness by itself. Ask whether the hookup is a potable supply and whether a current water report or advisory is available. Use a drinking-water hose and follow the coach's connection and pressure instructions.
Measure hardness at the hookup
Use a hardness test rather than judging water by its clarity or pressure. Results are commonly reported in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. Keep the units with the result so you can compare stops and judge how quickly the softener may need regeneration.
The USGS hardness guide explains the role of dissolved calcium and magnesium. A TDS meter measures a different property; it cannot tell you hardness on its own.
Scale is a maintenance concern, not a prediction of failure
Heating hard water can form scale on heating surfaces. Deposits can also collect on aerators and showerheads. The amount and rate of buildup vary with the water, temperature and use. A crusted faucet does not prove every pipe is blocked, and a water treatment system does not replace routine equipment maintenance.
Choose filtration for what it actually removes
Sediment media captures particles within its rating; carbon can reduce chlorine taste and odor. Neither is a substitute for hardness removal. Other water-quality concerns call for a filter with appropriate verified claims. See our RV softener vs. filter guide.
Test the treated water too
Check hardness after the softener using the sampling method in its instructions. Keep track of water use and regenerate before the resin loses its useful capacity. The interval can shorten when you move to harder water. The owner walkthrough demonstrates hardness testing on the H2O system.
Keep exterior rinsing separate
Softened water still contains dissolved salts. A dedicated DI stage can supply low-TDS water for a final rinse after the coach is clean. Monitor that rinse and service the resin when needed. DI treatment is not a reason to connect to an unsafe or unknown water source.

Tell us where you travel, how you use the coach and whether you wash it yourself. Add any hardness readings you have. Those details and the available bay space help determine an RV water softener and filtration configuration that fits the job.

- Confirm the supply and follow the coach's connection instructions.
- Measure hardness; a TDS reading is not a hardness test.
- Choose filter media for specific issues and regenerate the softener as needed.
- Use the DI stage for the exterior final rinse and monitor its output.
